Here's a (corrected) list of the basic uniform sets I recall form the various sources. This list is (Roughly) in chronological order.
Pre-TOS - Menagerie and Where No Man Has Gone before |
Pre-TOS Tunic and Black Trousers. We only see these in gold and blue. They do not have the black collars, but have large knit collars in tunic color. Some people think there might have been a third color (Beige), but I remain unconvinced. |
The "Away Duty Jacket" is blue-grey, and is a flap-front; the tunic collar can be seen peeking through the collar. also note: rank stripes are worn on the cuff, but are simple gold stripes, and we only see 1 for officers and two for the Captain. |
TOS Uniforms |
TOS tunic and black trousers. Tunics Tenne (that gold collor), Blue and Red. |
scant pattern tunic/skirt with tights. Tunics Tenne (that gold collor), Blue and Red. |
Dress combination is similar, sans rank, with gold front-closure trim. Tunics Tenne (that gold collor), Blue and Red. |
Later in series, command wraparounds added, in two different versions. In green. |
We also see jumpsuits over the black T-shirts, which may be enlisted personell. Red and blue jumpsuits are both seen, as is a green one (Spock in Spock's Brain) |
Doctor McCoy is also often seen in a satin short sleeved tunic, which is straight cut, rather than fitted. It bears no rank insignia. |
TOS Movies (TMP, TWOK, TSFS, TVH, ___ and TUC) |
TOS Movie "Penguin" (for the dress uniform)... the pastel jumpers with ranks on the shoulder and (on long sleeve crew-neck combinations) cuffs. Colors we've seen on the short-sleeve include grayish-blue, white, and beige. The "Service Uniform" seems to be the blue crew neck, but duty uniforms seem to be all three colors. There is a long-sleeve crew neck, a long slevve v-neck, a short sleeve v-neck, and also shown is the short-sleeve in beige. Note also that the blue trousers are seen worn with a white top. As a personal note, I actually LIKE these ones! |
The medical officers wear a rank-less uniform as a duty uniform, with an open-necked fold-over collar (the same kind of collar as "Normal" dress shirts). We see McCoy in Blue, and Chapel in white, so I don't doubt the possibility of them in beige, too. |
Flag Officers Dress uniforms have a white panel front. |
TOS Movie Maroons, with colored turtlenecks under the vest or jacket. |
Also shown are maroon with cream shoulder jumpsuits. |
The Missing Years (Between TOS Movies and TNG) |
Missing years maroons, same as TOS movies, but missing the turtlenecks. [shown in several TNG episodes, including Yesterday's Enterprise, and all the episodes with Wesley's Father]. Jumpsuits not in evidence. We know these post-date the TOS portion of Generations. |
TNG |
TNG S1 Black with colored body jumpsuits. |
Dress uniform is mid-thigh coat over trousers. |
Scant-pattern tunic is seen in background. |
TNG 2 piece black with colored body (tunic and trousers). |
TNG scant-pattern is occasionally still seen in background, with the new collar. |
Acting Ensign Crusher wears a grey tunic and trousers, which appears to be a cadet uniform, or possibly a recruit or trainee uniform. |
When Wesley is at the acadamy, we see black, two-piece jumpsuits with red shoulders and collar |
TNG Grey turtleneck with openfront black-shoulder/colored body jacket and black trousers. Seems to be optional, as both Capt. Picard and Ensign Ro wear them. |
TNG Movies DS9 and VOY |
DS9/Generations Grey turtleneck with openfront colored-shoulder/black body vest and black trousers. Seems to be optional, as I only recall Capt. Picard wearing it. |
DS-9/Generations/voy Black two-piece with colored shoulders over grey turtleneck |
First contact/DS9 black with grey shoulders over colored turtleneck. |
Also seen is a vest combination. |
Insurrection/DS9 Dress Whites (Black trousers, White tunic with front color panel in division color except Command uses white panel.) Command and Sciences are illustrated on the top row, and Engineering on the bottom along with a Command Flag Officer's. There are colored stripes on the cuffs, in division colors. Flag officers wear two stripes, and working officers wear one. The flag officers also wear their "boxed pips" stretching between the stripes (long axis along line of sleeve). All Officers definitely wear rank on collar as usual. On the Flag Officer's version, note the belt with the Arrowhead-in-a-circle buckle. Iv'e not shown the boxed pips on the cuffs, as I don't recall whether they're on one side only, or on both. |

Have I missed any? Do you know how to word a particular description better? Graphics done at the request of Dale McKee... Thanks for the kick in the trews, Dale!
All graphics done using ResEdit for the graphics editing (as 'cicn' resources) and the pasted into Lemke Software's Graphic-Converter.
When the New Trek Series comes out (My source at the local UPN affiliate doesn't have any details yet) you can bet that I'll be adding more to this page, so keep watching!
BTW, As several friends have pointed out over the years, the one good view of the scant-pattern in TNG is a male vulcan in yellow! (Just a walk-across).
